Chewable vs capsule lactase tablets

Straight up: chewable and capsule lactase tablets work equally well — they both deliver the same lactase enzyme. So the choice isn't about which is more effective; it's about which fits how and where you eat. Here's how to pick, and the two things that matter far more than format.

The short answer

Neither format is "better" for breaking down lactose. A chewable wins on speed and convenience — no water, easy to carry, good for eating out. A capsule wins if you'd rather not taste anything or find them easier to swallow. What actually decides whether a tablet works is the enzyme dose and taking it at the right time, not the shape it comes in.

Do they work differently?

No. Both formats supply the lactase enzyme your gut is short on, and there's no good evidence that one shape breaks down lactose better than the other. Whether a lactase tablet helps comes down to how much enzyme it contains and when you take it — the honest picture of how well they work at all is in do lactase tablets actually work?

When a chewable makes sense

  • Eating out — no water needed, so you can take one at the table with your first bite.
  • You want it fast — chewables are quick and fuss-free.
  • Swallowing tablets is a hassle — a chewable sidesteps that entirely.

When a capsule makes sense

  • You don't like the flavour of chewables — capsules are tasteless.
  • You want a higher dose — stronger, higher-FCC options often come as capsules.
  • You'll have a drink handy anyway, so needing water isn't a downside.
What actually matters: the best format is simply the one you'll actually have on you and remember to take. A perfect capsule sitting at home does nothing; a chewable in your bag saves the dinner.

What matters more than format

Two things decide whether a lactase tablet actually helps, and neither is chewable-vs-capsule:

  • Enzyme dose (FCC lactase units) — a bigger dairy meal needs more enzyme. A low-dose tablet in any format may not be enough.
  • Timing — take it shortly before or with your first mouthful of dairy, not after symptoms start. Full detail in how to take lactase tablets.
