How we review

Trust is the whole point of this site, so here's exactly how we work — who writes it, where the facts come from, and how we keep ourselves honest.

Who writes Lactose.com.au

The site is written and maintained by the Lactose.com.au team — an independent Australian outfit that's been running since 2013. We're not a milk brand and we're not funded by the dairy industry. We've also lived this ourselves, which is why the tone is practical rather than clinical: we're writing the guide we wish we'd had.

How we check our facts

Our health information is written from Australian and international clinical sources, not opinion. Where we state a figure — a prevalence percentage, a lactose threshold, symptom timing, a test's accuracy — we cite it inline and link the source at the bottom of the page. The sources we lean on most are:

  • Healthdirect — the Australian government health service
  • Dietitians Australia — the peak body for Accredited Practising Dietitians
  • ASCIA — the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy
  • The RACGP — the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
  • Better Health Channel (Victorian Government) and MedlinePlus (US National Library of Medicine)
  • Peer-reviewed studies for figures those bodies don't publish — for example, food-composition analyses for our lactose chart, and diagnostic-accuracy reviews for testing

Where reputable sources give different numbers, we show a range rather than pick a convenient single figure, and we say when the data is limited.

Our dietitian-review commitment

We're committed to having our core health pages reviewed and signed off by an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) before we call them final. Until that review has actually happened, we do not display a "reviewed by" byline or name anyone — because claiming a professional review we haven't had would be exactly the kind of thing this page exists to rule out. When an APD has reviewed the content, we'll name them here and on the pages they've checked.

We test what we recommend

Every product we rank is bought at full retail price and trialled against real dairy. No freebies decide a verdict, and there are no sponsored placements in our tested rankings.

Corrections & updates

Health guidance changes, and we get things wrong sometimes too. If you spot an error or something that reads as out of date, tell us via our contact page and we'll check it against the sources and fix it. We revisit the health pages as guidance is updated.

We're honest about money

Some links are affiliate links that may earn us a small commission at no cost to you. That never changes a verdict — we'll happily tell you when something isn't worth buying. It's what keeps the site free and independent.

A note on scope: everything here is general information, not medical advice, and it doesn't replace a consultation with your GP or dietitian. If your symptoms are severe, sudden, or come with weight loss or blood in your stool, see a doctor.
